Scott’s Punctum

This picture is actually from Camera Lucida, on page 114. The thing about this picture for me is, although it is cute, it also fills me with a sense of sadness and melancholy. It is in pictures like this where I can fully appreciate what Barthes mean about finding mortality in photographs. For whatever reason, this picture makes me think of the inventible end for both in it. Interestingly, one of the first things I thought of when I saw the picture was “oh no, he’s holding the puppy too tight, and crushing it.”

Your comment about crushing the puppy reminded me of Of Mice and Men. I too found this a really poignant photograph.
